What is the Titus County History Website?
While we enjoy working with The Titus County Historical Commission and our city and county governmental agencies, and greatly value and appreciate their help and assistance, the Titus County History Website is privately owned and operated by Robert and Mary Turner, and is not affiliated with local government or other civic organizations.
In October, 2006 we were made aware that information about Titus County's history is hard for most people to find. We discussed the idea of a history website for five days and decided to start one so that Titus County citizens and anyone else who is interested would have a convenient place to see the history of Titus County, Texas.
Our original intent was to simply create a community scrapbook where people could share their historic photos with others. However, as things turned out, it has become much more. We became fascinated with some of the photos that people shared with us and began researching the stories behind them. One thing led to another, and we decided to expand the site to become a comprehensive website where over time as the site progresses, people will be able to look up almost anything they want to know about the county's history.
We hope that by presenting the stories of many things people see every day and take for granted, our visitors will acquire an interest and appreciation of the people and things that came before them, and will learn from the site by seeing photos and reading articles about Titus County's history. Our greatest hope is to create an interest among all visitors, regardless of age, in preserving Titus County's history.
Because our website visitors may be very young or very old, their definition of history varies widely. Therefore, we write articles ranging in date from the 1800s to present, and covering a very wide variety of topics.
While we will highlight some individuals who contributed to building Titus County, we are more interested in showing the bigger picture of how Titus County evolved over the years from a very rural settlement with dirt trails for roads into the modern communities that it contains today. Therefore, we focus more on the county's infrastructure, its businesses and industries, buildings, parks, water systems, and other things that make today's lifestyle possible.
We are able to build and expand the website through the kindness of people in the community sharing their photos, stories, and information with us. We want to present all information as accurately and as completely as possible, and try to research each topic as thoroughly as remaining historic documentation allows us.
We hope you enjoy visiting the Titus County History Website and will do so often. Please let us know how we can improve the site, and please share any photos or information you have regarding Titus County's history with us so we, in turn, can share them with others.
We hope to eventually provide Titus County with a history website that is second to none. We sincerely appreciate the help and cooperation we have received from everyone who has loaned us documents and photographs and have provided information and equipment needed to build the site!
