Historic Homes and Buildings
Mount Pleasant and Titus County has lost most of our larger historic homes and many historic buildings due to fire, neglect, and demolition. In this topic, we show some of the town's homes and buildings for which we have been able to construct at least a partial history.
Unlike land owership, which can be traced through real estate deeds, buildings are much harder to research because many times they are rented and the ownership does not change. Likewise, commercial buildings are remodeled and a large building may be divided into several smaller ones, or several small buildings may be combined into a larger one. Either way, they don't resemble the building you see today.
We are working with the Chamber of Commerce to enhance their walking tour of downtown Mt. Pleasant by trying to record the history of our downtown buildings. Where sufficient information is available to document their construction and various uses through time, our website will document other historical Titus County buildings, including buildings that no longer exist, not only in Mt. Pleasant but in other Titus County communities.
If you have information about historic Titus County buildings, please contact us. We are assembling information as we obtain it to hopefully be able to feature the history of more of our county's homes and commercial buildings.

Shelton Gerhard's unique residence once sat at 805 North Edwards, Mt. Pleasant. Howard Petty later owned the house, but it has since been torn down and was replaced with a modern residence.
