Several Titus County post offices closed for various reasons.  It was common for the Post Office Department to contract with a local businessman in smaller communities to handle his community's mail.  Sometimes the person went out of business and no one else could be found who wanted to serve as postmaster. Other times, the community itself lost population and faded away.  In these cases, the community's post office was merged with a nearby post office so residents could still receive their mail.

The late U.S. Congressman Wright Patman compiled most of the following information about Titus County's community post offices in 1963.  The populations listed for the communities are from Congressman Patman's original 1963 listing.  We posted them to give visitors an idea of each community's population at that time.  Congressman Patman served the First Congressional District of Texas, which included Titus County, for many years.  We have updated his information when historical records have made it possible to do so.

Please contact us if you have further information about any of the following post offices.

Towns and communities which have never had a post office are also included with pertinent information.

Postmasters and their appointment dates were obtained from the postal records of the United States Archives and the Department of the Post Office, Washington, D. C.

Mileage location of each post office was obtained from sight location records, U. S. Archives.

May Discontinue Ripley Post Office
PRESENT POST MASTER HAS RESIGNED, AND NO ONE HAS APPLIED

There is a possibility that the Ripley post office in Titus county may be discontinued soon unless someone makes application for the office of postmaster, which has been held by R. W. Blankenship for the past several years.

Mr. Blankenship recently tendered his resignation to the department owing to ill health, and up to date no one has applied for the office The remuneration of this office is only about $100 per year, but since it has been located in Mr. Blankenship's store, he has been able to attend to the work without any loss, but it will not pay anyone to erect a building to house the office, and the business territory is not large enough for another store, so nobody wants the place.

Ripley is situated on the Paris & Mt. Pleasant railway, eight miles from Mt. Pleasant and as two rural routes from this place pass nearby, the patronage of the office is small, and in the event the office is discontinued, the route could supply the mail with very little inconvenience.
