TALCO NOW HAS NEW POSTMASTER
MRS. STELLA SCHULTZE WAS CHECKED INTO OFFICE SATURDAY

Postal Inspector R. H. Robertson was in Mt. Pleasant Friday and Saturday on official business. Friday afternoon he made a trip to Bryan's Mill, and on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by Postmaster Spearman, he went to Talco for the purpose of checking in Mrs. Stella Schultze as Postmaster at that place.

Mrs. Schultze received the appointment some time ago and has met all requirements of the Post Office Department requisite to accepting the position.

The Talco office has been moved from its old location to the brick building on the north side of the Talco State Bank, where new fixtures and furniture for the accommodation of the public have been installed.

The retiring Postmaster, Mrs. Leora Stevenson, has held the office for a number of years, making a very efficient official.

Post Office at Talco Is Robbed on Sunday Night

The Talco post office was robbed of everything of value some time Sunday night and it was said that all the supplies of the office were taken.  Even the safe was rolled from the building and carried away according to reports received at the local post office.

The robbery was discovered Monday morning when Post Master Farris Crown opened the office to start his day's duties. He found the office ransacked and records and papers scattered around. Business was suspended for the day awaiting the arrival of Postal Inspector Earl Deam, who was scheduled to arrive in Mt. Pleasant at 2 o'clock Monday to hold a meeting with post masters of this section relative to handling the bonus bonds of World War veterans.

Entrance to the post office was gained through a rear window, and the door was opened from the inside to allow the burglars to make their escape. Local officers went to Talco Monday morning to investigate the robbery as much as possible before Mr. Deam's arrival.

Mt Pleasant also had its share of robberies during the week end. The home of Barney Rogers was entered Saturday night and a quantity of clothing and valuables were taken.  A radio belonging to Miss Ona Campbell was stolen from the green house in the western part of town on the same night.  The room of Clyde McDonald at the Jefferson Hotel was robbed early Monday morning, and a Negro, Buster Davis, was arrested and placed in jail on this charge. Davis was recognized by one of the night porters at the hotel, who claimed to see him crawling out of the window. Davis is also suspected of other robberies lately.

Owing to the large number of floaters coming here as a result of oil activities, Mt, Pleasant and Talco citizens should be more careful than usual in taking care of their property as there are plenty of people now in this section who will not hesitate to steal anything where they have an opportunity. Sheriff Gaddis says that he is handicapped because of the limitation by law on the number of deputies that he is allowed to employ that he needs more men on his force, but the number he is allowed is set according to the population of the county.

Safe From Talco Post Office Is Found Thursday

The safe taken from the Talco post office when it was burglarized about three weeks ago was discovered Thursday in the bed of Sulphur River by a boy who was fishing in the stream.

The safe was found just east of the old bridge across Sulphur, about a hundred and fifty yards from the present highway crossing. It had evidently been dumped in the river by the burglars the same night that it was taken from the post office. At that time, the stream was higher than when the safe was discovered, and when the water ran low, the safe could be seen.
All of the money, stamps and money orders were taken from the safe, which was later closed and locked, and none of the papers that were inside was damaged when the door was opened.

Post office authorities have been notified of the recovery of the safe, and Federal officers are at work on the case.

New Post Office Building to Be Erected at Talco
Brick Structure to Be Built on Fifth Street Facing East

The Post Office Department has contracted with W. E. McClintock of this city for the construction of a new building to house the Talco post office.

Mr. McClintock will construct a brick building on his lot on Fifth Street, one block south of the present location of the office, and as soon as it is finished the office will be moved to this location.

The new structure will be 25 x 80 feet, and will be built especially for use of the post office force. It will be much larger than the present quarters, and will insure better accommodations for Talco people. The fixtures will be installed by the department as soon as the building is completed.

Inspector B. E. Deam, who visited the Talco office during the week, announced Saturday morning that he had recommended the employment of another clerk at the Talco office, which will insure better and quicker service at this office than at any time in its history.  There has been a great increase in business there, and another clerk was an absolute necessity.

The late U.S. Congressman Wright Patman compiled most of the following information about the Talco post office in 1963.  The population listed is from Congressman Patman's original 1963 listing.  We it give visitors an idea of Talco's population at that time.  Congressman Patman served the First Congressional District of Texas, which included Titus County, for many years.  We have updated his information when historical records have made it possible to do so.

Postmasters and their appointment dates were obtained from the postal records of the United States Archives and the Department of the Post Office, Washington, D. C.

Mileage location of each post office was obtained from sight location records, U. S. Archives.

TALCO
(Pop. 1,250)

In northwestern Titus County eighteen miles northwest of Mount Pleasant. Recollections of old timers attribute the name to the actions of a loafer on the front gallery of a general store who aimed a jet of chewing tobacco at a talcum powder can.  At that time the community had just gotten a post office but had not been able to decide on a name.  The tobacco juice hit the can, the brown stain blotting out the letter "m" in talcum.  This suggested the name Talcu.  Disapproval of the selected name by the Post Office Department resulted in a substitute name of Talco.

Office established under name of Goolesboro.
