The Inflation Calculator. In viewing historical dollar amounts, you must consider the dollar's purchasing power in that day, or what a dollar would buy, not the numerical dollar amount. Inflation of the currency is our federal government's way of covering up their many financial screw-ups by putting more money in circulation, which makes each dollar worth less, then repaying old debts with new money. This effectively reduces the amount of the debt by the amount of the currency inflation. For some reason, though, they don't appreciate it if people who are "running short" print more money on their own!
Inflation penalizes people who save and people on limited incomes because each dollar that they saved becomes worth less and less as time goes on and inflation increases. According to the inflation calculator, it only took $1.00 in 1957 to purchase the same amount of goods and services that now require $7.55 to purchase in 2007!
We found this neat website that converts past amounts of money into its current value, adjusted for inflation. We use this site to generate the comparitive values we use for amounts paid in the past to 2007 dollar values. You simply enter the amount to be converted, the original year, and 2007. (2007 is the latest year it can convert). There appears to be a minor bug in the conversion formula, but it is fairly close. We find this site invaluable in demonstrating the amount that the government has inflated our currency over the years and the amount of purchasing power that the dollar has lost.
