Titus County Hotels, Motels, & Lodging
Robert & Mary Turner's A Glimpse of Titus County, Texas History
The availability of hotels, motels, and other lodging facilities is important to a town's commercial development and tourism, and influence to some extent the amount of "outside" money that is spent in the local economy.

We ran across small bits of information about numerous hotels and motels while researching other topics, and were rather surprised at the number of lodging facilities that were located in Mt. Pleasant through the years.  We had never heard of many of them, and doubt if most of our visitors have, either.

Therefore, we decided to include photos and information about several of Titus County's early hotels and motels on the website.

In most cases, there is not enough information to create a full page about the facility.

The Jefferson Hotel (later Hotel Stephens) was for many years one of the largest and finest hotels in Mt. Pleasant and Northeast Texas and quite a bit of information is available about it.  We will eventually trace the Jefferson from its beginning in the early 1900s until fire destroyed Hotel Stephens in 1998.

We would like to expand this topic as much as photos and information allows.  Please contact us if you have information, photos, or artifacts from Titus County hotels and motels.

Hotel Morris, Mt. Pleasant, TX - (Photo LD-0001)

The Hotel Morris stood on the southwest corner of Jefferson and West Third Street.  Thomas C. Morris built the two story hotel in 1900 after a large department store that his family operated since the late 1880's in the same location burned.

SOME FUNERAL!

A man had just registered at a hotel. The bellhop had conducted him to his room, but in a short time the prospective guest appeared with his baggage at the desk again.

"I wish to check out," he told the clerk.

"But what is the trouble you just checked in," answered the clerk.

"Well," answered the guest, "I started to lie down on the bed for a minute and I saw a tiny dead insect on the pillow."

"Surely," answered the clerk, "a dead insect is nothing to worry about."

"Quite right," answered the guest "but there were about a thousand live ones attending the funeral."

The Southwest Corner of N. Jefferson and West Third, Mt. Pleasant, TX in January, 2008

This building now stands on the southwest corner of North Jefferson and West Third Street in the same location formerly occupied by the Hotel Morris.  We are not certain that the building itself is actually the old Hotel Morris, and will update this caption should more information become available.  However, the building does bear a fair resemblance to the original structure after numerous remodelings over the years.
