Camp Jackson, Mt. Pleasant, TX
Camp Jackson, later renamed the Jackson Motel, was once located on the southwest corner of what are now North Jefferson Avenue and West 15th Street (then named Poplar). A car wash is currently located on this corner in 2008.
Odus Jackson built Camp Jackson in the 1930s, and it was one of Mt. Pleasant's early tourist courts. The photos above show Camp Jackson as it appeared in 1938. The sign above the office advertises rooms for $1.00 and $1.50 with free fans. The $1.00 room in 1938 translates to roughly $14.50 in 2007, and $1.50 translates to roughly $21.50 -- not a bad price, even then!
We hope to develop more history on Camp Jackson as research progresses.

Fire Endangers Jackson Tourist Camp on Saturday
Automobile Burned and Some Damage Done to Structure
A fire which destroyed an automobile belonging to a tourist, also endangered Odus Jackson's tourist camp in North Mt Pleasant about 4:30 Saturday morning, causing some damage to the structure before it could be extinguished.
Carl Huckeba took the fire truck to the scene and on his arrival found that the rafters of the tourist camp, which is a two-story building, were on fire just above the blazing automobile, and using the booster tank, soon put out the fire.
Damage to the tourist camp is said to be light, but had the fire continued for only a short while, the entire structure would probably have been burned, causing a big loss. The automobile, which was a new one, was practically destroyed.
