A SPECIAL THANKS TO TITUS COUNTY'S NEWSPAPERS!
Early news and information was provided by newspapers. While radio and television can now provide instant news live from the scene of an event as it happens, without the printed record created by our local newspapers most of Titus County's history would have been lost forever.
Newspapers not only chronicle the day's major events, but also provide intricate insight into daily life of the period when they were printed. You can see how one event, like the discovery of crude oil near Talco, affected the rest of the county's economy through employment, the establishment of Mt. Pleasant's refinery, and the improvement to highway and railroad transportation.
While many stories do not qualify for a banner headline, you can watch the town grow and progress through stories about various civic group meetings and other stories. You can obtain information about the people who helped establish and build the area from their birth to news stories about their life to their obituaries.
Through advertising, you can see what items were popular at a given time and see what they cost. Advertisements provide a pictorial history of the development of many items that are today considered essential were developed, and provide a graphic example of how living standards have improved over the years
Much of the information contained on this website so far was obtained by reading microfilmed Mt. Pleasant Daily Times from latter 1923 to the 1960s and extracting details needed to tell the story.
We sincerely appreciate the generosity of Bobby Palmer with the Mt. Pleasant Daily Tribune and Hudson Old of the East Texas Journal. Both have helped us more than words can convey. Both gentlemen graciously allowed us to search their files for historical information and gave us permission to reprint any information and photos they had that we needed on our website.
Radio, television, and the internet have gradually become important ways to obtain news, but even today no one covers local news and chronicles daily life in Titus County better than your local newspapers!
