WINFIELD TO HAVE NEWSPAPER SOON
A Mr. Baker of Avery has purchased the printing plant of the Pittsburg Vidette, which recently suspended publication, and has moved the plant to Winfield, where he expects to start the publication of a weekly newspaper soon. The management of the paper is to be in the hands of a Mr. Bracken of Dallas. Mr. Baker says that the people of Winfield have given him a guarantee of 300 subscribers to begin with and a good sum of advertising each week.

HE RAN A NEWSPAPER
A preacher at the close of one of his sermons, said: "Let all in the house who are paying their debts stand up." Presently every man, woman and child with one exception rose to their feet.
The preacher seated them and said "Now every man not paying his debts stand up." The exception a care-worn hungry looking individual, clothed in his last summer's suit, assumed a perpendicular position.
"How is it, my friend," asked the minister, "you are the only man not able to meet his obligations?"
"I run a newspaper," he answered. "and the brethren here who stood up are my subscribers, and-". "Let us pray," exclaimed the minister." -Exchange.
COOKVILLE
According to R. L. Jurney in his book "History of Titus County, Texas 1846-1960". Mr. Jurney says that The Cookville News was started in 1897 by O. C. Story. It was later published by W. L. Hudspeth and operated for a total of twelve years.
Traylor Russell's "Pioneers and Heroes of Titus County" says that John E. Taylor published The Cookville Banner. Mr. Russell did not know whether or not he started this paper or purchased it. Mr. Taylor also did carpentry work on the side.
TALCO
According to R. L. Jurney, four newspapers have been published in Talco at different times. The Talco News, published by W. R. Baxter, was Talco's first newspaper in 1918. The Talco News was followed by The Talco Record for a while, but The Talco Record ceased publication. Frank Donnelly re-established the Talco News on January 1, 1937, and more recently the Talco Times has began publication.

HAS COPY OF OLD TITUS COUNTY PAPER
R. H. Hodge, who lives on the John Tigert place north of Cookville has an interesting relic in a copy of the second issue of the Cookville Banner, which was published at Cookville on January 1, 1890, and is therefore over forty years old. Mr. Hodge found the paper back of a picture that was hanging on the wall of the house when he moved into it.
The Banner was edited by J. E. Taylor and D. R. Reynolds, and it was a four column, four page sheet, half of which was printed by the A.1 N. Kellogg Newspaper Service, and the other half at Cookville. Just to show that conditions were about the same at that time as now, there was an article on the front page about "Hard Times."
Advertisers in the paper were C. M. Burford, drugs; J. E. Johnson & Co., general merchandise; J. M. Keith, billiard saloon; J. E. Taylor, blacksmith; T. S. Burford, physician and surgeon.
The Hub City News
Mary Smith Morrison published The Hub City News from offices at 200 West Alabama. The paper was a weekly, published every Thursday. We do not know when the paper was started or when it ceased publishing, but have a copy printed January 29, 1976.
The Patron
The Patron was a weekly newspaper published by W. J. Johnson each Friday in Mt. Pleasant in the latter 1800s. He later sold The Patron to W. J. Johnson, who owned it around 1872. Johnson in turn sold it to W. E. Blythe. The Patron was published under many different names over the years, and eventually became the Titus County Times, Titus County's only newspaper at the time. You can view a photocopy of the August 15, 1877 edition in the Mt. Pleasant Public Library's historical display.
The Southern Union
Before the Civil War, and for several years afterwards, The Northern Standard (later renamed the Standard) published in Clarksville, Texas was the most-read newspaper in Titus County. We found the following article in the Standard which mentions a Titus county newspaper called The Southern Union.
