Ida Garrett's November, 1886 Cookville School Report Card - (Photo SC-0002)

This is a scan of Ida Garrett's monthly report card for November, 1886 from the Cookville School.  Notice that classes were taught in Spelling, Reading, Writing, English Grammar, English Composition, Rhetoric, Geography, History, Philosophy, Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and that scores were additionally given for Attendance and Deportment.

The grading system was 10 - Perfect, 9 - Very Good, 8 - Good, 7 - Passable.  Apparently Miss Garrett was a pretty good student, receiving an 8 in spelling and reading and a 9 in writing.

The staff (which may have been the entire staff at the time) are listed as J.H. Day, Principal, Miss Kate Johns, Assistant, and Miss Kimbell, Music Teacher.

Cookville Soon To Add Building To School Plant

Plans are under way for the construction of a new building to be added to the plant of the Cookville School under the direction of the Superintendent, Wallace A. Phillips.

During April an election was held at Cookville when the school district voted $6,000 in bonds for building improvements. Through the aid of the WPA, an additional amount of $4,633 has been secured.

Construction is expected to start on the new building by June 15th, with completion of the structure scheduled for the opening of the school term next September.

The new building will house a gymnasium, home economic department, commercial department and administrative office and will be located at the rear of the present school building, which has become inadequate for the number of pupils which are attending the school.

This new structure will be of substantial construction, and the arrangements will be for a more convenient school plant. When it is completed, Cookville will have the only school gym.

New Gymnasium For Cookville About Finished

The new building for the Cookville school system is practically completed, and Superintendent Wallace Phillips announces that he hopes to be able to begin its use on Monday of next week.

The new building, which connects with the original school structure, which has housed the activities of the Cookville school system for several years, is modern in construction, and will be a credit to a much larger town than Cookville.

It will be used largely as a gymnasium for the basketball team, and will be fully equipped for this purpose, besides having a stage which can be used for school plays. It can also be utilized as an auditorium.

Rooms will also be available for use of the home economics class and as an office for the superintendent. Cookville people are justly proud of the new building, which will soon take its place as a real community center.  As a result of having a good gymnasium for its use, the Cookville basketball team is expected to "go places" the coming season.

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS AT COOKVILLE DIES
MRS.  W.  H.  JOHNSON PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL AT DALLAS MONDAY

Mrs. W. H. Johnson, superintendent of the public school at Cookville for the past few years, died at 6:45 o'clock Monday morning, according to a telephone message received by relatives here.

Deceased had been in poor health practically all of the winter and on Monday of last week went to Dallas to enter a hospital on account of a serious illness of intestinal influenza.  Complications are supposed to have developed to such an extent as to cause her death Monday.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of Parker County, and has numerous relatives at Weatherford.  She was a young lady of brilliant intellect, and had been instrumental in developing the Cookville School to a high degree of efficiency.  Her death will be universally mourned in her community, where she numbered her friends among all who knew her.
