The town of Mount Pleasant was founded when John Binnion, Sr., Richard Moore, and L. Gilbert laid out a forty-eight block town site to serve as county seat of Titus County.
1846
May 11 -- Titus County was created by an act of the Texas Legislature on May 11, 1846. The land for Titus County was demarked from land then contained in Red River County and included the land now comprising both Franklin and Morris Counties. Titus County was named in honor of Andrew Jackson Titus. Titus died April 9, 1855 and is buried in Savannah Cemetery in Red River County, Texas near his father James Titus.

June 18 -- D. McCall was appointed as Mt. Pleasant's First U.S. Postmaster

April 5 -- Robert J. Holbrook was appointed as Oak Grove's first U. S. Postmaster.
1855
April 9 - Nine years after the county that was named for him was founded, Andrew Jackson Titus died and was buried in the Savannah Cemetery in Red River County, Texas.
1856
June 12 -- Nehemiah C. Gould was appointed as Gouldsboro's first U. S. Postmaster. Gouldsboro later became Talco.
1857
January 22 -- William S. Coffey was appointed as Greenhill's first U. S. Postmaster. Greenhill is 11 miles north of Mt. Pleasant.
May 5 -- Cicero J. Corder was appointed as Monticello's first U. S. Postmaster. Monticello was 8-1/2 miles southwest of Mt. Pleasant.
1860
Titus County had a population of 9,648 people in 1860. Citizens voted 411 to 275 in favor of secession and sent 10 military companies to fight in the Civil War. Mount Pleasant had a Confederate transportation depot employing blacksmiths, carpenters, harness makers, and wheelwrights. It procured equipment, horses and mules, and made gear, harnesses, and wagons for the purpose of moving men, army supplies, and government owned cotton.

1870
June 16 -- David L. Hall was appointed as Cookville's first U. S. Postmaster.
1872
May 3 -- Sam Rowland, son-in-law of prominent pioneer Alexander Nevill, was hanged by Titus County Sheriff Bill Edwards on May 3, 1872 after being convicted of robbing and murdering a traveling peddler. September 2 -- J. M. Eaves was appointed as Ripley's first U. S. Postmaster. Ripley is a lost community that was located 8 miles northwest of Mt. Pleasant.

Franklin County was created; the land that comprises Franklin County was demarked from Titus County.
Morris County was created; the land that now comprises Morris County was demarked from Titus County.
1877
December 20 -- F. A. Lokey was appointed as Culberson's first U. S. Postmaster. Culberson was located 8 miles west of Daingerfield, now in Morris County.
1878
May 13 -- Calvin S. Stephens was appointed as Talco's first U. S. Postmaster.
1881

1884
September 8 -- James F. Wilkinson was appointed as Crescent's first U. S. Postmaster. Crescent is a lost community that was located 5 miles south of Cookville.
1885
August 28 -- Andrew J. Hutchings was appointed as Centenary's first U.S. Postmaster. Centenary is a lost community that was located 5 miles north of Monticello.
September 3 -- James S. Rountree was appointed as Argo's first U. S. Postmaster.

October 10 -- Patrick H. Carr was appointed as Winfield's first U. S. Postmaster.
1888
July 12 -- Volly Vanhoos was appointed as Wilkinson's first U. S. Postmaster. Wilkinson is now Sugarhill, 13 miles north of Mt. Pleasant.
1889
September 19 -- James W. Hewett was appointed as Black's first U. S. Postmaster. Black is a lost community that was once located 5-1/2 miles northeast of Winfield.
1890
June 30 -- Gartha A. G. Crawford was appointed as Gilpin's first U. S. Postmaster. Gilpin is a lost community that was located 4 miles southwest of Argo.
1892
May 24 -- John F. Merrett was appointed as Roeder's first U. S. Postmaster. Roeder is a lost community that was located 7-1/2 miles southeast of Mt. Pleasant.
1893
April 15 -- George W. Bistline was appointed Bly's first U. S. Postmaster. Bly is a lost community that was once located 5 miles south of Wilkinson (now Sugarhill).
May 19 -- Willis F. Black was appointed as Titus' first U. S. Postmaster. Titus is a lost community that was located 7 miles south of Talco.
C. O. Lide established Lide's Cash Store, which the family operated until May 21, 1929. D. D. and C. I. Lide took over active management after C.O. Lide retired.
1895
September 21 -- The Titus County Court House was destroyed by a fire of suspicious origin in the early morning hours of on September 21, 1895, destroying almost all county records. After the fire, court was held in an opera house on the second floor of the I.N. Williams building on the east side of the square until a new court house could be built.
