1950




1951

March 6 -- The City of Mt. Pleasant purchased 49 acres of Dellwood Park's original 120 acres for use as a city park.

March 6 -- The City of Mt. Pleasant purchased 10 acres of land north of and adjacent to Pecan Street for use as an Afro-American park.  It later became Oaklawn Park.

1954

July 16 -- Mrs. Lydon B. Johnson, wife of the senior United States Senator from Texas, was entertained by Mrs. C. E. Gaddis at Hearth-side, the Gaddis residence located just off the new Talco highway.

September 23 -- Mt. Pleasant's south water tower was placed into service.


1955

January 18 -- The City of Mt. Pleasant entered into an agreement with H. P. Narramore to dig a water well in hopes of relieving a critical water shortage.




1956

January 26 - The North Jefferson Church of Christ, located at 414 N. Jefferson, caught fire at 2:00 p.m. the afternoon of January 26, 1956.  The building was totally destroyed.

1958




1959

January 4 - Mount Pleasant Motors, located on North Jefferson Street, was destroyed by fire at 12:40 a.m. January 4, 1959.  The fire rekindled and the fire department returned to the scene at 7:00 p.m.  The weather was bitterly cold - so cold that the hoses froze to the ground.



1960

January 4 - On the afternoon of Monday, January 4, 1960, a fire broke out at 3:30 pm in the McCarty Hat Shop in the 100 block of East Third Street in downtown Mt. Pleasant.  Firemen who responded were overcome by smoke and fumes, which later led to the death of Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Firefighter Bob Simpson.  See detailed story under Mt. 1961

April - Mt. Pleasant's new fire station at 402 N. Washington was opened and placed into service.  The fire station was used from 1961 - 2001, when the Central Station was moved to the southwest corner of East Ferguson Road and South Florey Street.



1962

August 30 - Oilman Paul H. Pewitt sold his 43,000 acre, 67 square mile Pewitt Ranch to Broseco Corporation of Baltimore, Maryland for almost $4 million on August 30, 1962.  The ranch was only two square miles smaller than the District of Columbia.  Ranch land located in Titus County represented one-tenth of Titus County's total land area.

December 23 - The Bessie Caldwell house, a large two story house that occupied the entire block between West Second and Third Streets and North Van Buren and North Johnson Streets, caught fire the afternoon of December 23, 1962.  The beautiful home and most of its contents were destroyed.  Its former location is now Caldwell Park.

1964

December 4 - The Dr Pepper Bottling Company moved from 111 East Second Street to 1405 West Ferguson on December 4, 1964.



1965

July 9 - On July 9, 1965, Congressman Wright Patman told the Mt. Pleasant Times that a $152,480 contract for construction of a new 9110 square foot Mt. Pleasant post office building to be built at the southwest corner of the intersection of Van Buren and West Alabama had been awarded to J. R. Gladden of Victoria, Texas.

July 17 - Jim Barney, local Southwestern Bell Telephone Company manager, announced that a new telephone service which would significantly improve service for people within a three mile radius of Mt. Pleasant would be introduced on July 17, 1965.  The new Suburban Telephone Service meant there would never be more than four parties on any line within the three mile area, where previously there could be up to eight parties on any rural telephone line.

August 24 - Descendants of Grover C. Garrett donated the large collection of Titus County artifacts which he started in the late 1920s to the Titus County Historical Survey Committee for a local museum.  The articles, including spinning wheels, a loom, and many antique items of furniture, were brought to Mount Pleasant from a Cookville log cabin where they had been kept for a number of years.

September 29 - The Mount Pleasant American Petrofina Refinery loading dock was rocked by explosion and fire about 11:45 A.M. Wednesday, September 29, 1965.  Welder Horace E. Smith of Marietta, Texas received burns over a large portion of his body and Hershel Black of Mount Pleasant was hospitalized after he was overcome by smoke or passed out while helping fight the fire. More than 100 refinery employees and the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze.

November 11 - A $100,000 building permit was issued to J.C. Gladden of Victoria Construction for the new Post Office building at the corner of Madison and Alabama Streets.  Construction was started and completion expected on April 15, 1966.

December 27 - Talco City Marshal E.R. Grayson was charged with murder and released on $2,500 bond after he allegedly shot and killed Charles (Cotton) Johnson on Farm Road 71 about one mile east of Highway 271 in Talco about 10 o'clock Friday night, December 24, 1965.

The Mt. Pleasant City Council appointed Rex A. Mars as Mount Pleasant's first full time, paid Fire Chief.


1969

February 15 - The Mt. Pleasant Public Library closed in preparation for repairing and packing all books to be moved to its new quarters in the former U.S. Post Office building.


1970

March 3 - Brookshire's Food Store, then located on the northwest corner of East First and Madison, caught fire and totally involved the store before the fire department arrived.  The fire was extinguished, but rekindled and was permanently extinguished on March 4, 1970.



1971

John Henry and Margaret Mullins move the Broadstreet Farm House to 806 N Van Buren, Mt. Pleasant, from its original location southeast of Mt. Pleasant.  They restored the farm house and furnished it with period furnishings, then opened it as a museum.  (See detailed article under the BUILDINGS menu topic)

December 7 - Marshall's Department store, located mid-block on the north side of the square, caught fire.  The fire totally destroyed Marshall's and caused smoke damage in most buildings on the block.  The fire rekindled and was finally extinguished on December 8.



1972

The Broadstreet Farm House was awarded a Texas Historical Medallion.



1973

September 25 - Charles and Wanda Dalton purchased the Martin Theatre and Pleasant Drive In Theatre from United Artists Theaters on September 25, 1973.

1975

February 18 - Mr. and Mrs. Ed Keil held an organizational meeting for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Hotel Stephens on February 18, 1975.

1979

January 14 - Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Mount Pleasant held a Dedication Service of their new building on Sunday, January 14, 1979 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Knittel leading the congregation in the ribbon-cutting ceremony into the sanctuary to officially dedicate the church and furnishings.  After the service a reception was held in the parish hall where refreshments were served and guests were invited to inspect the new facility.

1984

September 7 - Damson Oil Company announced the "indefinite" and complete closing of Mt. Pleasant's Dorchester refinery, laying off 167 employees, on September 7, 1984.



1985

January - "Colonel" Buster Doss purchased the Martin Theater and converted it to a live performance hall where local musicians presented stage shows.

December 31 - On the evening of December 31, 1985, the Texarkana Airport control tower called the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department to respond to a call from a plane that was en-route to Dallas by way of Mt. Pleasant had reported that smoke had filled its cockpit.  The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department responded as the plane made an emergency landing near DeKalb, Texas and burst into flame upon landing.  The fire killed rock icon Rickey Nelson, his fiancé, and members of his Stone Canyon Band.

Tommy Spruill became Executive Director of Titus County Fresh Water Supply District No. 1, replacing John Mason, prominent Mt. Pleasant businessman and the District's long-time Executive Director, who passed away earlier in the year

P. A. Thomas, long-time head of the Titus County Democratic Party, resigned in October due to health reasons.

Pilgrim Bank broke ground for their new bank at 2401 South Jefferson, Mt. Pleasant in November, 1997.  Richard W. Strudthoff was selected as its President.


1998

The City of Mt. Pleasant completed restoration of its 1936 Ford-Boyer fire truck as a parade vehicle. (See full story under Fire Department topic).

Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Ted Gibson resigned in August to become chief in Nacogdoches.  Richard Parker was appointed in November to replace him.

Hotel Stephens and the Black Angus Restaurant buildings were destroyed by fire in early October.

Mt. Pleasant City Manager Rick Chaffin resigned in November to become City Manager of Griffin, Georgia.


1999


Titus County Sheriff Ricky Poole resigned in May.  Titus County Commissioners appointed Arvel Sheppard to replace him.

The Bridges Chapel community was struck by a tornado in May, killing Pauline Allison, destroying eight homes, and damaging at least 20 others.

County swapped 1917 Titus County Jail for Hotel Stephens property at corner of West First and Madison.
