MT. PLEASANT MAN MAY BE CASUALTY IN BATTLE OF JAVA
With the announcement by the Navy Department of the sinking of the heavy cruiser Houston in the big naval battle in the Java Sea, there is the possibility that at least one Mt. Pleasant man was a casualty in this engagement.
J. Harold Vaughan Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Vaughan, when last heard from, was a member of the crew of the Houston, but of course there is a chance he was rescued as some units of the fleet were able to avoid the Japanese during the battle and are now in Australian waters.
Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan are said to have received a letter from Harold mailed about the middle of January.

Even Walter Winchell of the New York Mirror made reference to Mr. Badt's rescue of the crew of a vessel from a country where the people are taught to hate Jews.

Selection of Draft Eligibles Begun Tuesday Morning
Wylie Hollis Lunsford Has Number First Called For County
The selection of the numbers by which men will be called for a year of military training was conducted in Washington Tuesday, beginning shortly after 11:00 o'clock in the Departmental Auditorium.
Just prior to the selection of numbers, President Roosevelt made a short address, pointing out the necessity of preparing the nation for the emergency caused by the attempt of dictators to dominate the entire world and destroy the principles of democracy. Total defense must be available to resist total war, and the young people of the country are ready to do their part. The President read letters from heads of Protestant, Jewish and Catholic national organizations approving the selective service plan. At present, only about 5 per cent of the more than sixteen million men will be called for training, according to Mr. Roosevelt, and at least 90 per cent can feel safe that they will not be called at all.
From the same goldfish bowl that held the numbers of the first draft on July 20, 1917, when Secretary of War Newton D. Baker drew the first number, Secretary of War Stimson, who was blindfolded, pulled out a blue opaque capsule which contained the number 158. Then Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau drew the number 192. Attorney General Jackson brought out 8,239, which was useless, as there were only 7,836 numbers. Secretary of the Navy Knox drew 6,620 and Secretary of Commerce Jones drew 6,658. All these were announced by President Roosevelt Senator Morris Sheppard of the State Military Affairs Committee drew 4,779, Representative Thomason of the House Military Affairs Committee drew 8,848, another useless number, and after a few other dignitaries had drawn numbers, the selection continued in a routine manner.
Of the first twenty numbers, only three were applicable to Titus County, with a total of a little over 2,500 names. They were the first, second and nineteenth numbers and those holding them in this county were the following: Serial number 158, Wylie Hollis Lunsford, Route 5, Mt. Pleasant; 192, Leroy Dee Robertson, Route 4, Mt. Pleasant; 105, Lester Bun Raney, Route 5, Mt. Pleasant. A coincidence in connection with the selection of the first number was that Mrs. Mildred C. Bell was in the audience watching the proceedings and when the first number was drawn it proved to be the on that was held by her own son for the District of Columbia.
The various Draft Boards of the nation will be given a list of the selections in the order they were made, and the men whose numbers correspond will be called before the board in the same order.

The men will be permitted to bring in such machinery in need of repair, and they will be fitted up for use again without cost, as material for this purpose will be furnished free.
Classes will be conducted for three hours each afternoon, and at the end of two months of training, the enrollees will be furnished with a certificate of merit, which will be filed with the state employment agency showing their proficiency. This may enable the students to secure well paying jobs.

Ex-Service Men Show Patriotic Spirit By Registering Saturday
Boys of 1917 Again Show Readiness To Serve Nation
The voluntary registration of ex-service men, conducted by Jack Jessup Post 210, American Legion, showed that the spirit of patriotism continues in Titus County, as the men again demonstrated their willingness to serve the nation, if necessary.
At 4:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, 120 men had put on paper their qualifications which might become useful if America should again become involved in war for the preservation of democratic principles.
The records thus obtained will be forwarded to the national and departmental headquarters of the American Legion, and a copy will be retained by the local post. These records may later become useful, as the Government could easily ascertain where to find men whose services might be even more useful than those who are being inducted in the armed forces at present.
Of course, it is not expected that any of the men who registered Saturday will be called into service, but there are countless ways in which they can serve the country, through activities at home, such as guarding against sabotage and even in forming a home guard unit for service in time of civil strife, taking the place of National Guardsmen.
Because a number of ex-service men had other duties Saturday and could not get off to register, there will soon be another date set for them to answer the questionnaires concerning what they are capable of doing to be of service to the nation.

Veterans to Have Second Chance to Register Saturday
Those Who Failed to Register Before Asked Do So Now
According to officials of Jack Jessup Post of the American Legion, World War veterans who failed to register last Saturday will have another opportunity of dung so this week. None of the veterans are forced to register but all are asked to cooperate in a patriotic movement, that they may be available for home guard in the case of an emergency.
Last Saturday a number of men were unable to register because of a shortage of necessary blanks but more have now been secured. Those wishing to use them, and it is hoped that every veteran in the county will eventually do so, may secure them at the office of the local selective service board or from Floyd Thomas hardware.
Saturday, March 8th, will be the second official registration day.

Local Medical Unit Will Be Organized Tomorrow Evening
Doctors, Nurses, First Aid Experts, Others Are Invited
A meeting has been called for tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock, for the organization of a local medical unit as a part of Titus County preparation for national defense. The meeting is to be held at the district court room at the court house, and has been called by Dr. J.M. Ellis, medical member of the County Council of Defense.
All doctors, nurses, first aid experts, ambulance drivers, and everybody who might be of assistance in the event of a disaster are invited to attend the meeting, which is to devise plans for the equipment of such a unit.
Many are of the opinion such preparations may be a little farfetched and unnecessary, but it is officially known that when the Japs made their attack on Pearl Harbor, the Nazis were to have bombed the Panama Canal and land troops by parachute in that area, but for some reason Hitler's plans failed to materialize. Should this have occurred, all of Texas would have been subject to raids by the Nazis or Japs, and it is better to be prepared for such an emergency as to undergo the attacks and not be ready.
Mt. Pleasant should plan for every eventuality, and the organization and equipment of a first aid and medical unit will be one of the means of doing so.

According to them, all persons registered for defense duty with the local ambulance and medical corps will be required to take the course.
Meetings will be held at the court house at least two nights each week, and it is hoped that more than two hundred persons will avail themselves of the opportunity of taking the courses. The training is of the utmost importance, not only in the event of a war disaster, but in case of any type or accident where life might be endangered.
Special textbooks for the courses may be ordered at tonight's meeting, the instructors stated.

NAZI FLAG AT TRIBUNE OFFICE
The Tribune is in receipt of a Nazi flag from Corporal John Browning. Cpl. Browning captured the flag when they took a town just a little ways from Naples.
Most everyone that comes in to see the flag wants to stamp on it, but we can't let them do that or Cpl. Browning would not have a flag when he returned home. D. C. Morgan did put his feet on it.
